Playlab Inc.
Publisher and support organisation for performance writing
Playlab is an independent organisation dedicated to supporting the development and production of new work by Queensland playmakers and publication of new Australian work in general. Playlab actively operates to identify playmakers and product, broker relationships between artists and companies, and facilitate creative developments to stimulate production activity.
Playlab’s programs are focused around the development of new work that has potential in the market place – the principle, “Development is Training” underpins this. These programs see direct, targeted investment in projects by individual playmakers and companies to engender quality, broker partnerships and push the work towards production. These programs are:
Lab Rats: A six-month program of development for three Queensland playmakers or creative teams where they develop a specific piece of work to the next draft stage, culminating in a presentation to industry in the form of a reading with professional actors.
Masterclasses: Playlab offers a series of master classes by nationally renowned industry professionals on various aspects of the craft of storytelling and the professional skills necessary to build a career.
Lab Assistance: Essential services that support the ongoing professional and creative growth of Queensland playmakers. These include auspicing, script assessments, referral and a No-Interest Loans Scheme for established playmakers.
History:Playlab was established in 1972 as a service to playwrights. Its publication division, Playlab Press, was launched in 1978 and has published over 70 texts since its establishment.
