Triple J Unearthed
Digital radio focussing on independent and unsigned Australian music artists from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation
Triple J Unearthed is a public funded digital radio station targeted at Triple J’s youth demographic aged 18-24, specifically at those interested in up-and-coming independent (unsigned) Australian artists.
Triple J Unearthed allows independent Australian artists that previously had to compete with well-established artists for Triple J’s airtime more opportunity to have their music broadcasted. It expands on Triple J’s previous Unearthed concept, which encouraged independent Australian artists to upload their music to the public Unearthed website for a chance to be played on Triple J, win the Triple J Unearthed competition or to potentially be discovered by music industry stakeholders browsing the site.
The Unearthed digital station site is still in development in 2011, but will detail artists, offer video, a gig guide and the station playlist. The original Unearthed website is also still available, which introduces Unearthed artists, profiles them and makes their tracks available to download as an MP3. Users can also rate and comment on tracks.
Listeners can find Triple J Unearthed by searching their DAB+ (digital) radio, through the website or via the iPhone app. DAB+ radio is currently only available in Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Melbourne, with more locations to be added progressively.
History:Triple J Unearthed was established online in 1995 by Triple J. In 2011 the decision was made to turn the online content to digital radio and Triple J Unearthed Digital was launched on 5 October 2011. The station is aimed to more efficiently serve Triple J’s commitment to broadcasting unsigned Australian artists.
