Jess Huddart is the Creative Director at the design studio, Josephmark, and co-founder and curator of Seven w/ Another. Joining Josephmark six years ago, she’s grown and nurtured the design team. Her work includes strategising and designing brands, websites and motion pieces, consistently leading the team to exceptional creative outcomes.

What are the significant steps you took in creating the career you have today?

I decided early on that I wanted to be a designer. I chose to study a Bachelor of Arts (Design and Marketing) and studied abroad in Finland, where I took as many creative subjects possible. I did free work experience in my final year, from which I was recommended to the company I work with today. Over the past six years with Josephmark, I’ve come to play an integral role and was offered Creative Director in 2009. Side projects have also always played a significant part in personal and professional development, including a public speaking course called ‘Decibel’ and an exhibition series called ‘Seven w/ Another’.

If someone could have given you one piece of advice at the beginning of your career, what should it have been?

Try not to doubt yourself.

Does Josephmark offer internships / work-experience?

Yes. We believe in giving back.

What do you find is the most common mistake a graduate can make?

Being too cocky. There is a big difference between being overconfident and confident. Just remember that a willingness to participate, openness to opportunity and a great attitude will always get you far.

What is the best and worst part of your job?

The best and worst part is HR.

What can we expect to see from Josephmark in the next 12 months?

Big things.

What about Seven w/ Another? What can we expect over the next year?

You can expect a fourth, fifth and sixth edition, along with a more comprehensive and recorded exploration of collaboration to achieve a wider berth of ‘creative talent’. And a move from the Substation to the Powerhouse, and hopefully an interstate tour in the not so distant future.
