Australian Rainforest Conservation Society
A national organisation for the protection of Australian rainforests
The goal of the Australian Rainforest Conservation Society is to protect, repair and restore the rainforests of Australia and to maximise the protection of forest biodiversity. This is done through research, lobbying, public education and grassroots support.
The Australian Rainforest Conservation Society has played a large role in protecting significant areas of Australia’s rainforests. Through the work of volunteers and scientific advisers, the Australian Rainforest Conservation Society has produced studies and participated in forums and campaigns that have influenced government policies and initiatives for rainforests and other native forests.
The Australian Rainforest Conservation Society has been responsible for three of Queensland’s successful World Heritage nominations (The Wet Tropics, Fraser Island, and the Gondwana Rainforest of Australia World Heritage Area). They coordinate major additions to National Parks, the transitioning of the logging industry out of native forest into plantations, major additions to the National Park estate in coastal bioregions. Their cooperative stakeholder-based processes includes the South East Queensland Forests Agreement, the Statewide Forests Process, the Delbessie Agreement, Springbrook Rescue and development of the Queensland Biodiversity Strategy.
History:The Australian Rainforest Conservation Society was founded in 1982 and is a national, non-government organisation with headquarters in Brisbane.
