Indonesian Festival

The annual Indonesian culture festival

The Indonesian Festival, most commonly known as Pesta Rakyat, is an annual celebration of Indonesia’s Independence Day. The festival offers visitors a unique mix of traditional and modern Indonesian art, music, dance, fashion, games, food and crafts. Each year the festival follows a certain theme to enhance the atmosphere. Pesta Rakyat 2011 used “Batik” as the theme for the entire segment of the event as well as the decoration. The audience enjoyed the Batik Workshop that allowed the audience make a Batik of their own.

Pesta Rakyat consists of a series of programs, each showcasing the culture and traditions of Indonesia, such as a variety of traditional Indonesian musical performances, dances, games and cuisines. The program showcases the talents of both local and international performers and craftsmen, giving visitors a taste of culture from all across the Indonesian islands. Visitors are able to interact with various forms of visual arts and crafts on display throughout the festival.

History:

Pesta Rakyat was first proposed in 2006 by Indonesian Students Association of Australia in Queensland (PPIA Queensland) as one of the institution’s annual program. The event was organized to promote the Indonesian culture and open for public. The first event was held in UQ St Lucia and the event commences annually until today. The goal of holding the annual festival is to introduce and promote Indonesian culture to Australian communities as well as to give Indonesian’s in Australia a taste of their home.
