Amnesty International
An organisation devoted to defending human rights
Amnesty International is a global human rights movement defending human rights and dignity. The organisation seeks to uncover human rights abuses, campaign to raise awareness, lobby government and provide support to victims of human rights violations. The organisation aims to promote a culture where human rights are embraced, valued and protected. Amnesty International bases its work on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which outlines basic freedoms that all individuals deserve. One of the prime tenets of Amnesty International is impartiality and non-partisanship.
The Queensland Branch of Amnesty International are currently campaigning on a number of issues including refugee and asylum seeker rights, human rights in Burma and women’s rights in Iran. The organisation also has a Queensland and Northern New South Wales Schools Network which provides support and information to students who have an interest in human rights.
The region’s action centre is based in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. Amnesty International relies on activists, university groups, volunteers, interns and supporters who work towards Amnesty International’s key message, which is to promote and defend human rights in Australia, and around the world.
History:Amnesty International is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary this year!
