A locally owned newspaper

With headquarters in Fortitude Valley, The Independent is a small scale newspaper that aims to provide alternative viewpoints on local issues for those who live, work and play in or around the city centre. Distribution covers the inner city region and Urban Renewal growth spots that surround including Spring Hill, Fortitude Valley, New Farm, Teneriffe, Newstead, Bowen Hills, Kangaroo Point and South Bank.

In keeping with their community centric focus, editorial subjects cater toward issues pertinent to the local community the paper services. Published twice a month, subjects covered in the editorial include current affairs, local news, lifestyle, entertainment and the arts with dedicated sections to politics, film, wine, the arts and travel. Feature columnists include prominent political journalists Mungo MacCallum and David Bray, who’s media career spans some 47 years.

The Independent culminates the efforts of a group of experienced Brisbane journalists who banded together in August 2001 to launch newspaper for those who lived near, or worked in, Brisbane’s city heart. It is affectionately nicknamed ‘The Indie’ by the journalists who are proud to pen relevant community news. The Independent has been the recipient of two Community Action Network awards for improving the social capital of, and fostering social justice in the local community.
