OPSO Media Awards, The
Acknowledging media commentaries which highlight mature-age citizens in Brisbane
The Older People Speak Out (OPSO) Media Awards acknowledges media contributions by industry professionals that reflect an positive attitude and treatment towards seniors in the local and national community. Media such as advertisements, photography, articles and features are key contributions to the awards.
The OPSO state Media Awards and national Media Awards are coveted by media and industry professionals. Entries come from programs like Andrew Denton’s Enough Rope, the Today Show, Australian Story and all major newspapers and magazines. This highlights OPSO’s main focus: that positive ageing is essential if the Australian community is to reduce elder abuse, social isolation, mature aged unemployment, and low self-esteem.
History:The OPSO Media Awards were first established in 1994 to reward the media for articles, photographs, advertisements and feature stories which reflect positive treatment of seniors and the issues they face. In 2004, the OPSO Media Awards were expanded in order to allow members of the general public, including students at school, to have their say on positive content in the media through the OPSO People’s Choice Awards and the Schools Media Awards.
