Gold Coast Wintersun FestivalAustralia's largest retro nostalgia festival The Wintersun Festival is a non-for-profit incorporated association supported by the Gold Coast City Council, Tweed Shire Council, The Southern Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce, Tweed Heads Chamber of Commerce and Industry, The Gold Coast Tourism Bureau and Tweed and Coolangatta Tourism Inc. The festival comprises a core theme of nostalgia and embraces all factors of the selected era featuring over 100 bands and performers, dancing, movies, more then 1300 Hot Rods, custom and classic cars, and competitions. Wintersun 2010 starts on Friday 4th June and ends with the huge Best of Wintersun Concert on Monday 14th June. The festival is held in the border coastal towns of Coolangatta and Tweed Heads on the New South Wales & Queensland border. Many events are free, some are in the streets while others are in the local clubs and shopping centres. History:The festival celebrated 30 years in 2008, beginning in 1978 as a local festival project of the Chamber of Commerce, and has continued grow through the years. Now with an estimated 60,000 people attending over the 10 day festival as well as establishing its own radio station for the duration of the festival. Wintersun adopted the ‘nostalgia’ theme in 1988 for a variety of reasons one was that Coolangatta was known as ‘The Honeymoon Capital’ of Australia from the late 1940s to mid 1960s.
