Old Museum, The

A heritage listed performance space

For over 110 years, The Old Museum has been a venue for cultural and educational services. Perched in Spring Hill, this heritage listed building is the home of several cultural and music groups that include the Queensland Youth Orchestra, the Queensland Youth Choir and Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre Company.

The Old Museum’s grand architectural design and high ceilings have the ability to accommodate for up to 350 people in its large Concert Hall and two rooms within the Exhibition Hall. Through various renovations over time, The Old Museum has been transformed to accommodate musicians, choristers, dramatists, exhibitors, audiences and councilors.

History:

The building was constructed as a meeting place for the Queensland National Agricultural and Industrial Association in 1891. In 1897, the State Government acquired the building, leasing it to the Brisbane City Council during the construction of City Hall. During the building’s long history, both the Queensland Museum and Queensland Art Gallery have sought refuge at The Old Museum until both were given permanent purpose built homes at South Bank in 1974. As part of the State Government’s protection and preservation of Queensland’s heritage, the exterior of this heritage listed building was restored in late 2005.
