UQ offers the School of Journalism and Communication

The School of Journalism and Communication offers courses covering practical and theoretical aspects of journalism. This includes areas such as reporting, investigating, editing, vision and sound, international journalism, ethics and law, research methods and application in multi-media environments. There are two journalism undergraduate programs offered at UQ, they include the Bachelor of Journalism (BJ) and Bachelor of Arts (majoring in journalism and mass communication). The School also offers a Bachelor of Communication with majors in public relations and mass communication. Both programs have postgraduate coursework equivalents (graduate certificate, graduate diploma and masters in journalism or communication).

The School aims to be an internationally recognised developer of the written, oral, aural and visual communication capacities. It also aims to display the creativity and effectiveness of students, staff and the wider community through its teaching and learning, scholarships, research and community engagement.

UQ’s graduates are prepared for a rapidly changing communications environment through employment and career development and understanding the contexts of communication, professional formation, personal orientation and changing dynamics. A key aspect of this is providing students with opportunities for internships and service learning through a variety of projects, such as producing online media and strategic communications for clients.

History:

The University of Queensland’s (UQ) journalism program was established in 1921. Therefore, the School can claim to be Australia’s longest-established journalism school.
