Australia Council

The Australian Government’s arts funding and advisory body

The Australia Council is Australia’s principal arts funding and advisory body, providing funding and support for arts throughout Australia. By investing in individuals and organisations, the Australia Council cultivates artistic ventures by promoting and funding Indigenous arts, community partnerships, culturally diverse and accessible arts, dance, media arts, literature, music, theatre and visual arts.

The Australia Council also provides funds for initiatives to help kick start arts programs, which support the long term development and growth of the Australian arts community.

Each year the Australia Council awards over 1700 grants across a range of artistic practices, investing more than $160 million in funding for creative artists and organisations. Australia Council also invests in growing audiences and marketing the arts in Australia and abroad. Australia Council also develops research and cultural policy, advocacy for the arts and provides advice to government and industry.

History:

The Australia Council was previously known as the Australian Council for the Arts, a non-statutory body established in 1968 as a sector of the Prime Minister’s Department.
