Classification Board

An independent statutory body responsible for classification decisions

It is a legal requirement in Australia for all films, computer games and some publications, either locally or internationally produced, to be classified before sale, exhibition or hire. The Classification Board is the statutory body responsible for such classification decisions.

The Classification Review Board has the power to review classification decisions, and in some circumstances, provide an overriding classification decision. The National Classification Code sets out the principles of classification for all Australian States, with the Department of the Attorney-General supporting both the Code and the Boards.

Any media practitioners creating a body of work which could possibly fall under the National Classification Code must contact the Classification Board to avoid penalties.

History:

Initially established as a division of the Department of the Attorney-General in 1988, The Classification Review Board is now supported by the Classification Operations Branch, a subdivision of the Department of the Attorney-General.
