Advertising Standards Bureau
The Advertising Standards Bureau manages Australia’s advertising self-regulation system
The Advertising Standards Bureau (ASB) is secretariat for the Advertising Standards Board and the Advertising Claims Board and administers and enforces a national system of advertising self-regulation, promoting consumer confidence and respect for the general advertising standards amongst industry professionals.
The ASB also provides a free complaint resolution service for the Advertising Standards Board. The Board makes determinations on complaints issued by consumers about most forms of advertising in relation to issues including the use of language, the discriminatory portrayal of people, concern for children, portrayals of violence, sex, sexuality and nudity, and health and safety.
The Board makes its determinations under appropriate sections of a Code of Ethics, as prescribed by the Australian Association of National Advertisers (AANA). The Code was developed by the AANA in consultation with the community and advertising industry.
The Bureau Board is responsible, with the CEO, for the corporate governance of the Advertising Standards Bureau. Through its strategic, financial and operational dealings, the Board aims to position the ASB as the foremost complaints resolution body for advertising in Australia.
