4RPH 1296 AM
4RPH is a specialist radio provider for the print handicapped
4RPH is a community orientated radio station that aims to bring the printed word of books, newspapers and magazines to handicapped listeners through radio. The specific listenership that 4RPH attracts are people keen to improve their literacy problems, with 4RPH aiming to help these individuals. For reasons such as age, literacy problems and disability, many Brisbane residents experience problems accessing information available in print. 4RPH is also an important resource for people who have never been taught to read, and for those who are learning to speak and write English. The success of 4RPH is due to the denotation of time by countless individuals now and into the future, and is committed to providing opportunities for the vision-impaired persons of the Brisbane area. This is done by offering training and employment programs at 4RPH.
As a community radio station, 4RPH relies heavily upon sponsorship, membership and community donations to remain financially viable. The Federal Government, through the Community Broadcasting Foundation, and the Department of Broadband, Communication and the Digital Economy provides a substantial portion of the station’s funding. The majority of funding is attained through sponsorships and community donations.
The RPH frequency is 1296AM and is available on digital radio.
History:In 1978, a public meeting was held to discuss the viability of a print handicapped radio station in Brisbane. It was eventually decided that the radio station 4MBS would host the inaugural radio transmission. In 1984, 4RPH was granted a license and began broadcasting on 13 February 1984 for three hours a day. 4RPH has grown to become a significant component of the Brisbane community radio.
