Queensland Multicultural Festival

A festival celebrating multiculturalism and diversity in Queensland

The Queensland Multicultural Festival has attracted over 280,000 people since 2004, and is the ultimate showcase of Queensland’s cultural diversity. The annual one-day event is staged in October in the Roma Street Parklands, Brisbane.

The event is coordinated by the Queensland Government and celebrates the benefits of cultural diversity and social cohesion in Queensland’s diverse community. The festival offers multiple food stalls from all over the world, music and dance of various genres, education, art programs and children’s activities. Small events surround the festival, including Diversity Talks, Diversity Writes, Shakespeare Theatre, the Multicultural Film Festival and sporting events. The Queensland Multicultural Festival attracts people of various ages and backgrounds, including families with children.

Entertainment is staged throughout the park, with a number of artists performing a variety of musical genres such as rock, jazz, classical, opera, world music and fusion. Children are also welcome to participate with a variety of family-friendly activities and workshops held during the day.

History:

The Queensland Multicultural Festival began in 2004 when the Queensland Government saw a need within the community to cultivate and promote multiculturalism as part of the Smart State initiative. Since its inception in 2004, the festival has attracted over 230,000 people. In 2008 a record 65,000 people attended the festival.
