ABC Classic FM is a public funded radio station by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation

ABC Classic FM is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s national classical music network radio station. The station’s musical style consists of a diverse mix of classical music from all over the world, including traditional and new release classical pieces. The stations audience consists of an older audience with 60 per cent of listeners over 55. ABC Classic FM is currently trying to encourage younger listeners by raising awareness of classic music amongst this demographic.

The program hosts specialise in classical music and as such hold in-depth discussions about the composers featured on their show with guests, themselves or the audience. The station also broadcasts overseas concerts from a range of artists. Announcers on ABC Classic FM reveal basic musical concepts, discuss different composers and offer in-depth explorations of classical music.

In addition to live broadcasting, the ABC FM website offers certain programs available as podcasts. The site also contains programming information, music listings and an event diary.

Listeners can find ABC Classic FM by tuning into 106.1 FM, searching their DAB+ (digital) radio or through the website. DAB+ radio is currently only available in Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Melbourne, with more locations to be added progressively.

Established in 1976 as ABC FM, the station went on to become known as ABC Fine Music. ABC Classic FM was launched by the Australian Broadcasting Association (ABC) in 1994 and was introduced as a digital radio station in a select number of Australia’s capital cities in 2009.
