Brisbane Underground Festival, The

10 day performing arts festival held at The Schonell Theatre

The Brisbane Underground Festival (BUGFest) was introduced in 2000 as an initiative of the Underground Productions Student Executive. It began as a one-week festival and has since grown to an annual 10 day event due to its growing popularity within the university and wider community. The purpose of BUGFest is to showcase new and emerging artists to the wider community.
As well as the nightly showcasing of 6 or 7 short plays by local writers, there are several events held during the course of the festival. These include BUGLounge, BUGfarce, BUGSports and CaBUGaret. These performances are given by a variety of actors, bands, stand up comedians, and poets.

After many years of working out of the University of Queensland’s Cement Box Theatre, since early 2010 Underground’s home has been the main stage in the Schonell Theatre complex.
The Underground Productions Theatre Company is the resident student theatre company of the University of Queensland and consistently stages various productions throughout the year. It is dedicated to the notion that theatre is vital to the university landscape and, as such, it promotes all aspects of student theatre and aims to contribute to a?greater sense of campus culture.
