Brisbane Pride Festival

Annual four-week festival celebrating Brisbane’s queer community

Brisbane Pride Festival is an annual four-week festival celebrating Brisbane’s queer community. It is Queensland’s largest gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender event, and the third largest queer festival in Australia. The event is held in winter each year, in the month of June, and has more than 50,000 attendees.

Brisbane Pride Festival is an inclusive community event. It is organised and operated predominantly by volunteers. The main feature of the event is the festival fair day that is held in Musgrave Park, South Brisbane. The fair attracts over 25,000 people. Other festival activities include art, sporting, community, and political events, as well as a parade through Brisbane’s city streets. It is a celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender culture and aims to bring the people of Brisbane’s queer community together.

History:

Brisbane Pride Festival started in 1990. The original event was conducted as a rally and gay pride march through the streets of Brisbane and concluded with a small gathering in Musgrave Park, South Brisbane. It was organised as a means of promoting public events and activities that contribute to and support queer culture.

Brisbane Pride Festival was originally run by a cooperative collective. In 2002 it became an association incorporated. The festival is coordinated by Brisbane Pride Incorporated, a not-for-profit organisation that is operated by a nominated board and volunteer committees.
