Australian Subscription TV and Radio Association

ASTRA is the main regulatory industry body for subscription television

The Australian Subscription Television and Radio Association (ASTRA) is the industry association for subscription based television in Australia, representing subscription television platforms and channels.

Through media releases, campaigns and conferences, ASTRA represents these members by providing a unified voice on issues affecting subscription broadcasters. ASTRA also develops regulations and codes of practice that must be adhered to by subscription broadcasting operators. The codes are developed in consultation with the Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA), which is now merged into the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

ASTRA represents satellite services, narrowcast television services, program channel providers, subscription television operators and communication companies and other associate members.

In 1992, the Broadcasting Services Act introduced subscription broadcasting and subscription narrowcasting services, adding to the three existing broadcasting services includes commercial, national and community. ASTRA was established in 1997 to represent the new subscription services, together with the Federation of Australian Narrowcasting Subscription Services (FANSS) and the Confederation of Australian Subscription Television (CAST).

History:

After the introduction of subscription television, ASTRA was established in 1997 to represent the new services, together with the Federation of Australian Narrowcasting Subscription Services (FANSS) and the Confederation of Australian Subscription Television (CAST).
