IP Australia
Government agency responsible for intellectual property (IP) rights
IP Australia is the federal government agency responsible for administering Australia’s IP rights system, specifically patents, trademarks, registered designs and plant breeder’s rights. IP Australia’s role is to provide a strong IP system which promotes innovation, investment and trade.
It helps to create a secure environment for investment in innovation, enables firms to build brand value and business reputation, encourages the disclosure of inventions and the transfer of knowledge and technology and provides a legal framework for trading intellectual assets.
IP Australia incorporates the Patent, Trade Marks, Designs and Plant Breeder’s Rights (PBR) Offices. It is a prescribed agency within the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR), operating independently of the Department on financial matters and with some degree of autonomy on other matters. By charging fees for services, IP Australia recovers more than 95 per cent of costs.
History:Formerly, IP Australia was known as the Australian Patent Office which was established on 13 February 1904.
