Queensland Narrating Service

Produces audio for people with print disabilities

Queensland Narrating Service (QNS) is a non-profit community organisation that enables people with print disabilities to access information in audio formats. This service aims to enrich the lives of people living with print disabilities and allows them to participate in decisions that affect them in their daily lives. The organisation uses skilled and motivated volunteers and staff to convert print material into a number of formats.

QNS staff organise workshops for narrators, which encourage and nurture their skills. To maintain its high level of service, QNS relies on funding supplied by government grants through the Disability Services Queensland. QNS maintains resources in libraries around Australia, providing audio books for the blind or vision impaired patrons. This facility provides access to written information for those that experience a literacy, learning or language difficulty due to a physical disability or debilitating illness.

History:

The Queensland Tape Recordists Association (QTRA) was formed in 1967 as a social club for those interested in tape recording. In 1973, the QTRA became the Queensland Tape Service for the Handicapped (QTSH) and its constitution was sanctioned by the Justice Department. In 1994, QTSA received a grant from the Queensland Department of Family Services, Aboriginal and Islander Affairs to appoint a Community Information Services Development Officer. QTSH underwent a name change in 1997 and became Queensland Narrating Service.
