The Australian is one of a very few nationally circulated broadsheet newspaper printed Monday to Saturday. Circulation figures for The Australian’s are more than 130,000 and their readership is 432,000.

The Australian’s head office is in Sydney but it is printed at various locations around the nation. It has permanent bureaus in every state and territory capital as well as in Cairns. Brisbane’s bureau is small yet plays an important role in the function of the paper as it reports on events all over southern Queensland and parts of northern New South Wales. The bureau employs a small group of journalists and photographers who report exclusively to The Australian.

The Australian has a strong focus on its online section. The website aims to provide up-to-the-minute news coverage. Through the website, readers have the opportunity to interact by posting their thoughts, ideas and comments.

The paper, and its weekend equivalent, The Weekend Australian, have many features throughout the week, including Information Technology, Higher Education, Media, Wealth, Sport, Arts and Aviation.

The Australian was launched in July 1964, and was Rupert Murdoch’s first newspaper. The Australian was the country’s first newspaper with its own section on information technology and computers.
