Australian Communications and Media Authority

Australia’s regulator for broadcasting, telecommunications and online content

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is a government regulatory body responsible for the regulation of broadcasting, radio communications, telecommunications and online content.

The ACMA reflects a converging communications industry characterised by the emergence of new technologies and eroding barriers between the radio, telecommunications and broadcasting industries. The formation of statutory authorities such as the ACMA demonstrates the government’s vision of a consistent regulatory approach for the communications industry, irrespective of the delivery platform.

The ACMA has a range of responsibilities in regulating the communications industry. These include: promoting self-regulation and competition in the communications industry, while protecting consumers and other users; fostering an environment in which electronic media respect community standards and respond to audience and user needs; managing access to the radio frequency spectrum; and representing Australia’s communications interests internationally.

History:

The ACMA was established in 2005 as a result of the amalgamation of two previously separate government bodies: the Australian Broadcasting Authority and the Australian Communications Authority, to ensure a more efficient regulation of the media landscape.

The ACMA also undertakes a number of international activities including engagement with the regulation of worldwide online content. They also provide advice and input to the development of ongoing government objectives.
