Government agency responsible for ensuring fair trade

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) ensures that individuals and businesses comply with all the Commonwealth’s competition, fair trading and consumer protection laws. It also promotes competition and fair trade in the market place to benefit consumers, businesses and the community as well as regulating national infrastructure industries.

The ACCC is the only national agency dealing with competition matters and is the sole agency in charge of enforcing Competition and Consumer Act 2010 and the state/territory application legislation.

Whilst the agency has a network of offices in capital cities to handle complaints, inquires and provide guidance to businesses and consumers, it cannot offer legal advice.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is an independent statutory authority that was originally formed in 1995 to administer the Trade Practices Act of 1974 (now re-named to the Competition and Consumer Act 2010) as well as other acts.
