Australian Communication Exchange
An organisation which provides communication services to people with disabilities
Australian Communication Exchange (ACE) is a dynamic and innovative not-for-profit Australian organisation. ACE offers communication products and services to deaf, communication impaired, hearing impaired and hearing people.
ACE provides the relay service component of the National Relay Service under a contract with the Commonwealth. The National Relay Service receives 2200 to 2500 calls a day. ACE also funds and supports new services for the deaf, hearing impaired and speech impaired communities.
In November 2008, ACE launched its two year trial of Video Relay Service (VRS). In October 2009, ACE started its Captioned Telephone trial. Both of these technologies are being funded entirely from company reserves and two million dollars has been committed to help make these services a reality.
ACE works closely with government, other not-for-profit organisations and community groups. They are committed to collaborations with the deaf, communication impaired and hearing impaired communities to improve access to communications and services. ACE believes that communities deserve the same communication standards as the rest of Australia, and ensure this through their services.
History:The Australian Communication Exchange formed in May 1995 after a merger between two well-known and established Australian parent organisations Deaflink Inc. and Deafness Resources Australia. The organisation used Deaflink’s relay experience, DRA’s equipment experience and company status, and the strong community support for both groups.
